Come with us to Italy for this quick weekend escape bike trip that will take us on a 4 day journey with 2,5 days of riding the best trails in Natisone Bike Arena and Bernadia, the rising star in the Italian bike destinations. Only 1 day of vacation is required since we would depart on Thursday and come back on Sunday.

Come ride one of the longest and most fun enduro trails we’ve ever ridden while also visiting some of the best local trails on the italian/slovenian border. Matadown has similarly to the Megavalanche become an annual event with 150+ riders going downhill for almost 12 kilometers all the way down to San Pietro del Natisone. The race down from the Matajur mountain has become a very popular trail to ride esp. in autumn, spring and partially in winter as the temperatures tend to stay sunny around 10-15 degrees even during winter season. Aside of Matadown there is a very active trailbuilders community in the area with tons of well cared for trails all around San Pietro, Torreano, San Leonardo and the near surroundings. This time we will also visit Bernadia before we head home, which is conveniently on the way. The great thing is that most trails can be shuttled almost all the way up with a van and therefore there will be little need for pedalling or pushing, although to be absolutely honest there will be some of that as well.

The price includes accommodation, shuttling and guiding by local and Traildeer guides for the duration of the trip. Transportation will be individual combining riders into private cars with about 6 hours from Bratislava, however if there’s interest we can rent a van and trolley and drive together.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Thursday
In the afternoon at 3PM we will load the van and trailer and depart Bratislava for San Pietro al Natisone, which should take us about 6 hours. Late check-in between 9-10PM will promise enough time for a shower and going to bed.

Day 2 – Friday
After breakfast and a bike & safety check we will head up with the shuttle for about 25 minutes to the Riffugio Pelizzo (1320m absl) below Matajur, where we will say bye to driver & shuttle and will have to push our bikes for about 30 minutes to reach Matajur 1642m. First we will have our breath taken away by the jaw-dropping panorama of the Slovenian and Italian alps as well as the lower mountains on the opposite site. There we will put on our gear and make a final check before the 12 kilometre ride down to San Pietro. This is a red marked trail that has tons of flow intersected by many technical sections, however everything can be also pushed down. Parts are very rocky and can be considered black level difficulty, however we will be stopping at every tricky section to ensure no one drops in blindly. Once down we will have lunch at the Cascina restaurant, which has one of the best steaks and its own homemade beer in San Pietro. After lunch we will head up to Puller from where we will first start with the Machette 2.0 trail, which is a fun red marked enduro trail with the usual stuff – stones, roots, berms, chutes etc. Then we will do 2-3 more runs here on the Cobra and Vernasso-Easy DH, trails and finally do Cobra and Radici trails down to the opposite site of the mountain towards Torreano. Then the day is done and we can grab a fantastic ice cream in the city, as well as beers and enjoy a bit of rest before we restart riding again the next morning.

Day 3 – Saturday

On our second riding day we will explore the San Leonardo trails Trivio, Spik and Bunker, which start from the same place and are easy to shuttle. They gradually become more demanding with Trivio being the easiest, fast with a few technical passages. Spik is more technical with slow sections where brake control is important, but its still a very fun trail. Finally the Bunker trail is the most difficult one starting from the Bunker after which it has been named. There’s quite a few rocks on a relatively shallow slope, which is tricky to navigate. Then the difficulty rises and the trail goes into the most difficult section, which features a very exposed and steep section really only for the bravest and most skilled riders. Alternatively we will take the Baita trail to finish at the bottom, which is a very beautiful and fast trail. After that we will board the shuttle and continue towards the town of Clastra, where another fantastic technical trail awaits us. Depending on how much time we have, we will either finish up the day and go for a great dinner or if there’s still light out and energy in our legs we can return to the Machette area and try one of the trails we left out the previous day like Radici and Rock Garden or repeat the ones we liked the most.

Day 3 – Sunday

On the final day we will pack up our stuff and head for about 45 minutes to Bernadia near Tarcento. It is an up and coming location that boasts 3 trails mostly intermediate difficulty, 2 tougher red ones Forte Alto and Tirfor, as well as Brisicul a black trail with some steepness and technical charm. Here we’ll finish the trip at around 2-3pm, say goodbye to the guiding crew and depart for home with an estimated arrival by 9pm.

Difficulty

All trails will be relatively difficult ranked mostly as medium or red with occasionally riding blue or black trails. The terrain is more akin to that like Finale Ligure with loose rocks and softer soil, roots, rocks, rock gardens on the way. In terms of fitness there won’t be too much pedalling as we will use the shuttle whenever we can, however some trails like Matajur don’t have direct access with the car, therefore some pedalling and pushing will be required, but this should be manageable even for people with the worst fitness 🙂
