Martinské Hole are an epic mountain range in the middle of Slovakia, above the city of Martin. With the highest point mat Veľká Lúka with 1475m it is by far not the highest of ranges, but definitely one of the most beautiful the country has to offer. In terms of riding there are only very few places that can rival the pure natural trails with its unending inventory of roots, rocks and all sorts of tricky natural challenges.
Our full weekend trip will start on friday evening where we will meet up at our accommodation, get to know each other sharing a laugh and a few beers and then go get some good night sleep before it all begins the next morning.
Riding day 1
On saturday morning we will first do a quick bike check to ensure that everyone’s ride is ready to go. Then the shuttle will bring us up to Martinské Hole, from where we will climb the remaining 250 height meters to the top. From there our first descent will take us down and up towards Minčol and then traversing the mountains all the way down to Strečno. You can expect epic views, gnarly narrow trails with many rocks and occassional hidden gulleys, which sometime can swallow your entire wheel. There are also very steep descents, which are really a challenge for even the advanced riders. Once in Strečno our driver will await us and while loading the bikes, we will grab a quick drink at the bar here. Back again on Martinské Hole we will pick one of the restaurants to grab a hearty lunch and take a breather. We will enjoy another half an hour of pedalling to the top w where the second part of saturday’s bike adventure begins.
From the top we will set off on a hiking trail towards Kunerad, otherwise called Viper. As with the first descent, this is a hearty Enduro ride which will tax your strength and endurance significantly even though almost all downhill. With about 35km and a 1000 vertical meters we will finish the ride with a good beer down at the town of Kunerad to savior the experience. We will pack up for the day around 5pm and head to the accommodation and a great dinner together.
Riding day 2
On Sunday we will head towards Kunerad where we will ride many fun trails of the area together with the trail builders, who will guide us and show how to best tackle the challenges. Although not as epic in terms of views, the more interesting given the quality of the trails and its fun factor. We will grab lunch on the trails since we will depart around 3-4pm to still make it home in time for dinner.
We will check out either before or after riding on sunday depending on the final location of our accommodation, which will be located either directly on Martinské hole or in Kunerad. It will be a well-equipped apartment with everything we will need for this weekend. We will provide more information about accommodation closer to the date.
Difficulty
Martinské Hole is one of the best, but also the most demanding areas in terms of riding and fitness. This is a pure Enduro location, not only the way down, but also up. In our case, however, thanks to shuttle uplifts during the first day, fitness will not be so important, although we will climb about 1500-2000 altitude meters altogether.
The important part, however, is really the difficulty of riding, which really does not need to be underestimated. This is very hearty terrain, where you will have to constantly control your bike when passing through tangles of roots, rocks or loose stones in narrow trails and gullies, crossing through fallen trees or branches all that in quite steep terrain. In the past, several participants overestimated their abilities and it was too much for them in the end. As a result, they had to carry their bikes down most of the steep sections, which delayed the more capable riders the entire group which we are trying to avoid. Therefore, if you are not really used to “harsh” natural conditions and do not enjoy riding through “sketchy” terrain, then you better skip this trip and find something smoother. On the other hand, of course, we know that where your head won’t let you through, it’s perfectly okay to get off the saddle and push the bike through.
As part of the booking process, we will contact individual riders and check their abilities. If you are looking for a place to compare to the riding in Martinské Hole, then the red and black trails on Malino Brdo are similar in difficulty, or possibly some more difficult trails on Branisko.
