For those that don’t know, Izrael might not be the frontrunner location for your next winter mountain bike adventure, but read on and you may reconsider. Although not a mountainous country as such, it does have a strong appeal for riders due to its very unique landscape that differs entirely, whether its in the greener north of the country, its more populated center or its sandy dunes in the dry desert of the south, which is where the most memorable biking happens.

The best time for Mountain Biking is from October till April when you have summer temperatures ranging between 18 and 25 degrees with a minimum of rainy days. Since the country is approximately 500 kilometers across from north to south, even if the weather should rear its ugly head, we are able to quickly switch places and get to a good riding spot within a 2 hour drive.

When in Izrael however, it is very much worth also to visit its ancient towns and cities and inhale some of its religious history, as well as take in the beauty of its architecture and landscapes.

Difficulty

The riding in Izrael is very specific and has a lot to offer to all levels of riders, however in general intermediate riding skills will be enough to tackle most of the trails and have fun at the same time. The trails here are somewhere between XC and All-mountain with some techie enduro sections, but most riders will have no problem of tackling them. However be prepared for loose dry ground with loads of sand on the trails. The desert is of course very unique and different to the Centre or North of the country where the riding is more European style. We will usually use 1 or 2 shuttles per day and then spend the day riding, however you don’t need to be scared of the distances and whether your fitness level is good enough as we won’t be doing any huge climbs and usually will fit the riding into 30km per day. The beautiful thing is that you can ride a trail starting at 600 meter above the sea for 3-4 hours in the morning, then get lunch and spend the rest of the day floating on your back in the Dead Sea 400 meters below sea level.

Itinerary

The trip will be divided into two parts with us first visiting the south, setting up our HQ in the city of Arad from where we will kick off the 3-4 riding days in the desert. Also we will only have to take one shuttle per day in the morning and then we will spend the rest of the day riding to maximize our experience. We will do another endure trail Sugar the next day, which is among the most popular trails in Izrael.

The next day we will have a similar setup, but this time after enjoying some of the shorter but fun trails near Eliat we will grab snorkeling or scuba gear and go explore the coral reefs of the Red Sea at the southern tip of Izrael near the Egypt borders. For those that just want to relax there’s the option to just enjoy a nice afternoon on the beach with a drink and swim.

If there’s interest we can spent another day in the south and also do an epic XC trip, that will take us through breathtaking nature with places to take pictures and enjoy unique desert vistas. While based in Arad we can also visit the ancient fortress of Masada based atop of an isolated rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea.

The itinerary may change depending on conditions and preferences of the group, although we will try to stick to the plan as much as possible.

A visit to Izrael wouldn’t be complete without us visiting the ancient city of Jerusalem and some of its most beautiful sites like Haram Al-Sharif (the Temple Mount), the Western Wall and the individual religious quarters to get a glimpse of wholly different cultures. There are many things to see here, so depending on the groups preferences we will decide how long we will spend and which monuments we will visit.

Once our hunger for sandy bike adventures and chilling at the sea is satiated (can it ever?) we will pack our stuff, hop into the shuttle and switch our base to Tel-Aviv, the capital of Izrael, which is a very active and fun city to stay in esp. in the evenings. From here we will be launching our bike adventures in the central and northern part of the country. There are many trail parks here with a multitude of trails of all difficulties, usually a bit shorter with less descent than in the south, however very much fun and easy to climb, to be repeated as often as we want. We will explore the areas of Ofer, Mishmar and Misgav, which are the some of most interesting here. Although still much different than the forests in Europe, there is a lot of greenery in form of trees and bushes finally giving us the option to get out of the sun and enjoy some shade while riding.

The landscape here is still very unique but more similar to other places close to the sea like in Croatia, Mallorca etc. but with beautiful vegetation and flowers here and there.

On our off-day we can either again chill at one of the beaches in Tel-Aviv or go explore the city in depth – with Jaffa, the old city, the popular markets or the old Tel Aviv port. Or mix it up and still do a few runs of the local trails and then go discovering. Prices in Izrael are higher than in most of Europe including accommodation and food. A regular dine-in meal with a drink costs about €25 and up, but there’s a lot of great street food available with prices around €10-12 per meal with a drink. For those who love beer, you may want to consider switching to an alternative for the duration of your stay as a large one from the draft will cost you around €8.
